Thoughtful Thursday is a weekly meme hosted by Reading Is Fun Again where I’ll answer whatever bookish question is thrown at me. If you would also like to participate, find out the rules by clicking here.
This Week’s Question:
What is your favorite POV style? First person? Second person? Third person?
In reading: I’ve read many books in my lifetime and have experienced all three point of views. Though I could name at least one book I’ve thoroughly enjoyed in each of these categories, I have to admit that I’ll always lean more towards first person. Something much more intimate happens during first person, a connection to the narrator that you cannot quite establish in second and third person work.
In writing: This is a question I still haven’t quite answered, and it is one I struggle with at every new writing endeavor. I can never choose between first and third person. Either way, I’ll have to give something up. Would I rather include dramatic irony by allowing you glimpses into moments the main character is not able to see, or would I rather strengthen the emotional link you develop by drawing you more into the narrator’s thoughts, sentiments, and impressions?
Which is your favorite? Leave a comment below.
